Land Rover Hippos Wallpapers

The official Land Rover Blog has released a humorous new wallpaper as part of its weekly wallpaper series. The wallpaper depicts a Freelander hanging out with a couple of hippos in a Saharan river. The caption on the print campaign reads, “FREELANDER    Born to be free.” The desktop wallpapers are available in four sizes and can be downloaded from the Land Rover Blog:

We’re not too sure how a Freelander would fare against a hippopotamus. Adult hippos can weigh up to 7,000 pounds and are a much more agile than their bulk would suggest. The current 2011 Freelander 2 (LR2) is a lightweight compared to some of these living behemoths, coming in at a mere 4,255 pounds. Hippos are also very aggressive and considered one of the most dangerous animals in Africa. Comparatively, Freelanders are generally regarded as docile creatures that are quick to rise to the occasion when needed.

RKCR/Y&R created the “Freelander Hippos” advertising campaign for the UK market. The campaign was released in October 2002 and resulted in some enthusiasts referring to their Freelanders as “hippos.” This nickname has stuck, and remains a common term of endearment for the Freelander.
