2011 Land Rover Discovery 4 Armoured

As you can imagine, armored vehicles designed for civilian use sell well in certain parts of the world. Land Rover’s entry into the armored vehicle market is based on the Discovery 4 (known as the LR4 here in the U.S.), and offers significant improvements over the earlier Discovery 3/LR3 Armored. The Discovery 4 Armoured (LR4 Armored) was developed in partnership with vehicle armoring specialist Centigon, which specializes in independently certified armored sedans, SUVs, and cash-in-transit vehicles.

“Developed by Land Rover in partnership with global leaders in vehicle security, the Discovery 4 is the ideal choice for government agencies, security organizations and businesses whose employees are exposed to high-risk locations,” says John Graham, Commercial Manager Armoured Programs, Land Rover.

The Discovery 4 Armoured is designed to offer blast protection against a 33 pound (15 kg) device detonated in close proximity to the vehicle and also provides under floor protection. Passive interior protection has been augmented with a driver’s steering wheel and a passenger fascia dual-stage airbag restraint system. Perhaps one of the most important security features of the Discovery 4 Armoured is that it appears virtually identical to a standard Discovery 4.

Security specifications are as follows:

  • European Standard BS EN 1522 FB6 and BS EN 1063 BR6 (high velocity assault rifle).
  • Side blast protection – 33lb. device in close proximity to the vehicle.
  • Under floor protection against 2 x DM51 hand grenades.
  • Heavy duty wheels and run flat tires – Goodyear Wrangler HP all-weather tires.

To help handle the added weight of the armor (the Discovery 4 is no lightweight, even in stock trim), the vehicle features uprated air springs and re-tuned dampers, larger diameter anti-roll bars, and heavy duty Alcon disc brakes front and rear. Otherwise, the vehicle includes all the amenities and all-terrain features one has come to expect in a Land Rover. The Discovery 4 Armoured is fitted with the standard 5.0-liter V8 engine and offers seating for up to five. To top it off, the Discovery 4 Armoured has a full three-year, 50,000-mile (80,000 km) factory warranty.

We can now add “attend a tactical driving school” to our list of things we would love to do in a Land Rover.
