2011 Range Rover Autobiography Ultimate Edition

Worldwide, there are dozens of tuners who specialize in producing bespoke Land Rover and Jaguar vehicles. If you are a regular RoverGuide reader, we’re sure you’ve seen several of them featured here.  Most recently, we took a look at a the Horus edition Range Rover Evoque produced by German tuner Loder1899.

The Bespoke Land Rover Formula

The formula for creating a bespoke vehicle is actually quite simple. Take one of Land Rover’s existing products, spice it up with proprietary styling and/or performance options — body kits, exhaust systems, interior treatments, wheels, improved engine management, grill inserts — let the buyer make the final call on details such as colors, and (hopefully) turn a tidy profit in the process. Many of these design firms develop their own signature design aesthetic, which can become very recognizable brands in their own right.

Of course, this market for custom made-to-order vehicles that are almost “factory direct” has hardly went unnoticed by Jaguar Land Rover. For example, Land Rover itself is no stranger to producing special edition vehicles. The company has been doing it to one degree or another for decades under “Land Rover Special Vehicles” banner. The company is also fond of producing limited editions, which bridge the gap between full-on special editions and standard production vehicles. The two most recently featured here on RoverGuide were the 2013 Range Rover Sport HSE Limited Edition and the 2012 Land Rover LR4 HSE Luxury limited edition.

So, adding it all up, you can probably see where this is going: special editions, limited editions, bespoke vehicles, aftermarket tuners, made-to-order.

Engineered To Order (ETO)

ETO will be responsible for a series of ‘special edition’ models as well as a range of options.

At the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition in Beijing, China, Jaguar Land Rover announced its new Engineered To Order (ETO) division. The divisions will be “responsible for extending the Jaguar and Land Rover brands with a series of ‘special edition’ models as well as a range of personalization options.” In other words, JLR is getting into the bespoke vehicle business alongside the likes of Hamann, A. Kahn Design, Startech, and others.

Jaguar XKR-S and Range Rover Autobiography Ultimate

2012 Jaguar XKR-SLand Rover launched ETO by displaying two three (Range Rover Evoque Special Edition) vehicles that were produced by the new division. Or, considering one of them is a 2011 model, produced by the team which would be officially introduced as ETO in Beijing.

The first is the Jaguar XKR-S that tweaked the already svelte XKR to create “specific exterior changes that allowed the car to cut the air cleanly and solidly at very high speed.” The Jaguar XKR-S is powered by a 550-horsepower 5.0-liter supercharged V8 and does zero-to-60 MPH in 4.2 seconds. All while managing 22 MPG on the highway.

The second offering on display was the Range Rover Autobiography Ultimate, which is actually the aforementioned 2011 model that helped plant the seeds for the official launch of ETO. The Autobiography Ultimate features a tweaked the exterior that delivers a unique look and also features a handcrafted interior that uses soft-feel leathers and unique veneers. Overall, the special edition Autobiography was inspired by the architecture found on super yachts, which is most readily apparent in the wood decking used as flooring in the cargo area.

In diesel-friendly regions, the Autobiography Ultimate is powered by a 4.4-liter TDV8. In other parts of the world, it is equipped with Land Rover’s standard 510-horsepower 5.0-liter V8 supercharged engine found under the hood of the ‘lesser’ Supercharged and Autobiography Range Rovers.
