2011 Land Rover LR4 Passenger View Off-Road

The 2011 Land Rover LR4 is the brand’s mid-line offering and the most able off-road vehicle in Land Rover’s U.S. lineup. The LR4 offers a number of improvements over the LR3 which it replaced for the 2010 model year. Most notable improvements include a more powerful V8 engine, increased reliability over previous generations, and a more modern interior package. The LR4 is available in three trims: LR4 V8, HSE, and HSE LUX.

All information on this page is for U.S.-specification vehicles unless otherwise indicated.

2011 Land Rover LR4 Trims

The 2011 Land Rover LR4 is available in three trims, starting with the “base” trim, the LR4 V8. The mid-level trim of the series is the HSE and the HSE LUX tops out the line. Introductory MSRPs range from $48,500.00 to $57,665.00.  Given their impressive level of standard equipment, all three trims have a limited selection of option packages. The HSE LUX with all available options brings with it an MSRP of just under $66,000.00. Popular options include paint color upgrades ($950.00), 20-inch wheels ($2,500.00), and the Heavy Duty Package ($750.00), which includes an active locking rear differential and full-size spare tire.

2011 Land Rover LR4 Performance

The 2011 LR4 enjoys a significant engine upgrade over the LR3, which it replaced for the 2010 model year. Gone is the well-respected Jaguar 4.4L V8 and in is a new Jaguar-derived 5.0L V8 that ups horsepower to 375 (up from 300 in the 4.4L V8).  The 3.0L V6 diesel is not available in the United States at this time. Backing the 5.0L engine is a six-speed automatic transmission with CommandShift. CommandShift allows clutchless manual shifting through all six speeds, with a full-automatic Sport mode available for tighter torque control. This powertrain delivers 12 MPG city and 17 MPG highway through the full-time four-wheel drive system.

2011 Land Rover LR4 Exterior

The LR series has featured the same basic look since 2005, when the LR3 replaced the Discovery II. The biggest change found on the LR4 over the LR3 is the replacement of the 4.4-liter V8 with a much more powerful 5.0-liter unit. Additional updates found on the LR4 include enhancements to the Terrain Response system, which assists with increasing the LR4’s already impressive off-road capabilities. Chief among these enhancements are the new gradient control features, which assist the driver on steep inclines when Hill Descent Control has not been activated.

Aesthetically, the most noticeable exterior change of the LR4 over the LR3 come with an updated grill treatment and clear tail lamp lenses, and the addition of an engine air intake grill on the driver’s side. Overall, the Land Rover LR4 stays true to its heritage by including a largely box-like design ethos, a tall greenhouse-like cabin, and styling cues such as the stepped roof (which accommodates a raised rear seating position), and an Alpine (panoramic glass) roof panel. Body-colored mirror caps, color-coded wheel arches, rear bumper and rear appliqué panel are also present (these used to be gray plastic clad).

2011 Land Rover LR4 Interior

Compared to the LR3, the LR4’s interior is a huge step up as far as appearance and functionality. Gone is the imposing square center stack that is overloaded with buttons and in is a sculpted interior that features an intelligent layout for controls. The Terrain Response controls have been relocated to a position less likely to attract spills. As far as seating, the command driving position gives greater visibility. Even though the LR3 is a rather bulky vehicle, it does not feel like you are sitting “in a bathtub.” Standard five seats with available seating for up to seven passengers via two jumpseats (another long-standing hallmark on Discovery series vehicles).

Another major update to the LR4 is the available Vision Assist Package for the HSE and HSE LUX. This package includes HID head lamps (standard on the HSE LUX), adaptive front lighting (swiveling headlights), automatic high beam assist, surround camera system, power-folding mirrors, trailer assist, and trailer hitch assist.

Seating Capacity: 5 (7)
Headroom (Front/Rear/Third): 40.4/42.4/40.1 in.
Legroom (Front/Rear/Third): 42.4/37.6/36.3 in.
Shoulder room (Front/Rear/Third): 59.2/59/42.8 in.
