2012 World Car Awards at NYIAS

While Land Rover proceeds with showing off its new Range Rover Evoque Convertible concept, the production Evoque continues to collect awards. The most recent award comes in the form of the 2012 World Car Design of the Year, which was announced at a press conference hosted by Bridgestone Corporation at the 2012 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS). The intent of the award is to recognize new vehicles that highlight innovation and style. The World Car Design segment is one of four categories, which also include the Word Car, World Performance Car, and World Green Car.

The World Car Awards

In total, 46 vehicles were eligible this year, each of which were reviewed by a panel of five world-class designers. The panel included Masatsuga Arimoto, automotive design commentator; Silvia Baruffaldi, Managing Editor of Auto & Design magazine; Gernot Bracht, former designer at Renault; Sam Livingstone, Director of Car Design Research; and Tom Matano, Executive Director at the School of Industrial Design at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

The 2012 Evoque was up against solid competitors, including cars from Hyundai and Citroën.

After the designers had given their recommendations, 64 jurors voted in February to select the winners. The Range Rover Evoque was up against some solid competition, particularly with the new Hyundai Veloster. The Veloster has received a great deal of attention this year for its fresh look, which builds on Hyundai’s (and Kia’s) recent crop of well-received cars. Along with the Veloster, the Volkswagen Up!, Citroën DS5, and the Porsche 911 rounded out the finalists for the World Car Design award.

“We are honored that the Range Rover Evoque has been named 2012 World Car Design of the Year. This prestigious accolade recognizes the overwhelmingly positive response we’ve received to the Evoque’s bold, dramatic design. It is a car that truly resonates on an emotional level,” said Gerry McGovern, Land Rover Design Director and Chief Creative Officer.

The interior of the Land Rover Discovery Vision Concept looks a lot like the bridge of the J.J. Abrams' USS Enterprise NCC-1701 reboot. This can be either a good or a bad thing, depending on how much of a Star Trek geek you happen to be.
