1,000,000th Land Rover Discovery

Land Rover announced today that the 1,000,000th Land Rover Discovery has been produced at the Jaguar Land Rover manufacturing plant in Solihull. To celebrate the event, Land Rover is taking the 1,000,000th Disco and two additional vehicles on an expedition from Birmingham, UK, to Beijing, China. The expedition will cover 8,000 miles, 13 countries, and take 50 days to complete.

The goal of the expedition is to raise £1 million ($1.6 million USD) for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), making the expedition Land Rover’s most ambitious fundraising event ever. The funds raised by the expedition will be used to support a water sanitation project in Uganda. If you would like, you can visit Land Rover’s 1,000,000th Discovery page to make a donation to the IFRC.

The Land Rover Discovery

The Land Rover Discovery line has picked up over 200 awards during its lifetime and 2011 marked record sales.

The Discovery has seen four generations of production in its 23 year history. These generations include the Series I, the Series II, the Discovery 3 (LR3), and the Discovery 4 (LR4).  Launched in 1989, the Discovery slotted between the Range Rover and the Defender. In the U.S. market, the LR4 is the only seven-seat Land Rover available and also Land Rover’s most utilitarian offering until we see the Grand Evoque and the Defender Concept 100, respectively. Land Rover also intends to return to the “Discovery” naming convention and drop the “LR” naming structure; a decision we fully support.

Discovery Heritage

The word “iconic” gets thrown around pretty much everywhere in the automotive industry. However, for some vehicles the word still has meaning. Used extensively in the Camel Trophy series throughout the 1990s and around the world by both on- and off-road enthusiasts alike, the Land Rover Discovery has gone on to become a truly iconic vehicle in its own right. This rarefied status has paid off well for the company. Land Rover reported that the Discovery line has picked up over 200 awards during its lifetime and 2011 saw record sales for the model. Some 45,000 Discovery vehicles were sold into 170 markets around the world.

“Many people are involved in the production of the Discovery, and many have been here for the whole journey, from car number one to car number one million. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank every one of them. They have done a brilliant job, and have displayed great dedication and service. These are the men and women who have made the Discovery the success story it is today, ” said Alan Volkaerts, Operations Director, Solihull Operations.

The Journey of Discovery Expedition

After all the fashion shows it’s nice to see the company launching a true expedition event that will put a Discovery back into the type of setting that forged Land Rover’s reputation as a premier off-road vehicle. It might not be the Camel Trophy or G4, but we’ll take it. Tomorrow, we’ll be giving a bit more background on the expedition itself and some more details on the 1,000,000th Discovery. Perhaps even a video or two.
