2012 Lexus GX 460 vs. 2012 Land Rover LR4

The 2012 Land Rover LR4 and the 2012 Lexus GX 460 are comparable in almost every way. While the LR4 has certain advantages that derive from its larger engine and its specialized off-road systems, the Lexus enjoys greater fuel efficiency, a better warranty, and a reputation for quality. While the Land Rover LR4 V8 has a starting MSRP of $49,750.00, to compare prices fairly we should note that the LR4 HSE and the GX 460 feature nearly identical MSRPs, as do the LR4 HSE LUX and the GX 460 Premium.

Setting aside intangibles such as the aesthetics, the Land Rover’s greatest advantage over the Lexus GX 460 comes from its purpose-built off-road systems and its more powerful V8 engine. The LR4’s engines offers 74 more horsepower than the 4.6L V8 found in the Lexus, which in turn gives the LR4 the advantage when it comes to payload an towing capacity. However, this larger engine is thirstier, and lags the Lexus by 3 combined MPG; not an insignificant amount over the lifetime of the vehicle. When comparing powertrains, it should also be noted that both vehicles in all trims are full-time 4WD.

Unless you plan on going off-road or have an affinity for the Land Rover’s heritage, a final buying decision might just come down to aesthetics. Each vehicle features a certain amount of distinctive visual appeal. Where the LR4 is traditional Land Rover boxy, the Lexus has much more fluid and sculpted look.

LR4 vs. GX 460 Reliability

Another significant advantage that the GX 460 enjoys is Lexus’ reputation for reliability. In J.D. Power and Associates’ 2011 Initial Quality Study, Lexus as a brand enjoyed a five-circle (“among the best” in J.D.Power-speak) rating for Overall Quality. Land Rover as a brand scored just two circles (“the rest”). Specifically, J.D. Power and Associates named the GX 460 the “Highest Ranked Midsize Premium Crossover/SUV in Initial Quality” for 2011.
