2012 Range Rover Evoque in Firenze Red and Fuji White

Back in early August, we joked that the word ‘Evoque’ would eventually come to mean, “to collect awards at an alarming pace.” As it turns out, we were right. Since August, the all-new 2012 Range Rover Evoque has earned an astonishing number of awards and acknowledgments.

Two of the more recent accolades come from Auto123.com and Bloomberg News. The Canadian automotive portal Auto123.com awarded the Evoque its ‘Best Luxury Compact Utility’ back in late November. More recently, Bloomberg News’ Jason H. Harper named the Evoque ‘Crossover Car of the Year’ as part of his ‘Best Drives of 2011’ awards.

Auto123.com Best Luxury Compact Utility

Auto123.com designed its awards to help Canadian car buyers with identifying the best vehicles for the new model year. All 2012 model year vehicles on sale in Canada were eligible for the award as long as it was 1) available for testing and 2) on sale before November 1st. Auto123.com journalists ranked vehicles on a points scale. Each juror was allowed to distribute 25 points among all the vehicles nominate in each of the 20 categories. A maximum of 18 points were allowed for any individual car and the final scores were not published.

The Range Rover Evoque was up against the BMW X3 and the Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class in the ‘Best Luxury Compact Utility’ category. Lindsay Duffield, President of Jaguar Land Rover Canada, had this to say about the award: “This is an exciting vehicle for the Canadian market and we are thrilled the members of Auto123.com agree with us that it is a winner. We believe many Canadians who had not considered Land Rover before will want all that Range Rover Evoque offers.”

Bloomberg News Crossover Car of the Year

Bloomberg isn’t exactly the first outlet we would think of when it comes to reading about cars, but the publication does feature a solid automotive section headed up by Bloomberg News’ Automotive Critic, Jason H. Harper. Staying in line with Bloomberg’s financial and business roots, the autos section primarily features executive cars. The section also happens to cover vehicles with MSRPs that make us seriously question our career choices — Lamborghini, Ferrari, Lotus, etc.

The Bloomberg News ‘Best Drives of 2011’ list was assembled by Harper and includes five categories: Crossover, Supercar, Economy Car, Sports Car for Mortals, and the Overall 2011 Winner. The 2012 Range Rover Evoque nudged aside the usual competitors from BMW and Lexus to take the top spot in the Crossover category. Harper had this to say about the Evoque: “I’m really knocked out by the Range Rover Evoque model’s synthesis of style and utility. It’s simply a great design.”

The ‘Best Drives of 2011’ Winners

  • Crossover: Range Rover Evoque
  • Supercar: Lamborghini Aventador
  • Economy Car: Hyundai Veloster
  • Sports Car for Mortals: BMW 1 Series M Coupe
  • Overall 2011 Winner: Audi A7
