2012 Range Rover Evoque Five-Door (Colima Green)

There’s a joke that goes something like this, “Q: How do you know when somebody doesn’t watch TV? A: Because they will be sure to tell you.” Well, we’re telling you now; we watch about 10 minutes worth of current television programming per week. Obviously, we don’t watch too many episodes of BBC Top Gear TV — but we do watch the show’s Land Rover clips on YouTube.

That said, we’re perfectly aware of the significant influence the show, its hosts, and the BBC Top Gear Magazine have on the automotive industry. It’s estimated some 12 million people worldwide read BBC Top Gear Magazine, and millions more tune into the TV show and website. This considerable industry might was focused on the 2012 Range Rover Evoque recently in the form of the BBC Top Gear Magazine 2011 Car of the Year award. Not only did the Evoque earn the publication’s coveted ‘of the year’ award, sometimes-infamous TV presenter Jeremy Clarkson declared the Evoque his favorite new car of the year. This must certainly be akin to winning two awards in one, according to many fans of the BBC Top Gear TV series.

Range Rover Evoque vs. the Competition

The Range Rover Evoque won out over a very eclectic mix of competitors, including the BMW 1 Series M (a premium compact sports coupe), the McLaren MP4 12c (a 592-horsepower sports car), the Ferrari FF (a $300,000.00 grant tourer), the VW Up! (a tiny city car), and the Kia Picanto (another low cost city car). The judging panel included BBC Top Gear Magazine Editor-in-Chief Charlie Turner along with the magazine’s editorial and road testing team. Rounding out the panel were, of course, the three BBC Top Gear TV presenters; Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond.

“Universal approval from the most opinionated minds in the industry is almost unheard of. Which gives you some idea of just how good the Range Rover Evoque, TopGear’s 2011 Car of the Year, really is,” said Turner.

Land Rover stated that the BBC Top Gear Magazine award was the 34th international accolade for the Evoque since the SUV’s launch earlier this year. The Evoque has been on sale in the UK since September and since early October in the U.S. market. For its second month on the market, Land Rover found 669 buyers for the Evoque here in the United States.
