2012 Range Rover Evoque VCA Certification

The 2012 Range Rover Evoque has been a magnet for good news over the past year. Not only has the Evoque won more awards than we can keep track of, but just recently it received environmental certification from the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA). The VCA conducted a ‘cradle-to-grave’ life cycle assessment of the Evoque that analyzed the Evoque’s overall environmental impact. As you may know, Land Rover was very committed to making the Range Rover Evoque the most environmentally sustainable Land Rover to date. The company did so by making the vehicle light, efficient, and by using recycled materials throughout.

Land Rover is one of few automobile manufacturers to have completed an officially recognized study of the lifetime environmental impact of a vehicle, further reinforcing the company’s outward commitment to sustainability. The VCA Certification itself was presented by Paul Markwick, VCA CEO, at a ceremony held at the Jaguar Land Rover engineering facility in Gaydon, Warwickshire, England. The precise model assessed by the VCA was a five-door Evoque Pure equipped with the 150-horsepower TD4 diesel engine and a six-speed manual transmission. Unfortunately, this particular specification is not available in the U.S. market.

Land Rover and Future Sustainability

The study not only evaluated the Evoque itself, but also the manufacturing process that goes into making the vehicle. Data points such as materials used, paint consumption, solvent emissions, and electricity consumption are also factored into the assessment. As such, the study is not purely looking at what is, but also what could be. Land Rover will use the data uncovered by the study to further improve the sustainability of its vehicles and of its manufacturing process.

As part of Land Rover’s sustainability efforts, the company plans to reduce waste to landfills, reduce operational CO2 emissions by 25 percent by 2012, cut water consumption by 10 percent by 2012, and to reduce tailpipe emissions by 25% before 2015. For more details, you can watch a couple of brief videos that provide an introduction to Land Rover’s sustainability plans.
