Land Rover Supports 2011 World AIDS Day

Land Rover, in conjunction with one of its six Global Humanitarian & Conservation Partners, has announced its support for World AIDS Day on December 1st, 2011. The support is part of Land Rover’s three-year partnership with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) that includes support for Red Cross HIV/AIDS programs in China, the Netherlands, and South Africa.

Support in South Africa

Land Rover and Africa is inexorably linked, so it comes as no surprise that Land Rover focuses many of its charitable efforts on the continent. The country of South Africa, in particular, is the focus of the Land Rover-IFRC ‘Reaching Vulnerable People Around the World’ program. According to a recent Land Rover press release, South Africa suffers from one thousand AIDS-related deaths daily and some 5.6 million people have HIV. To help combat the spread of the disease and assist those living with it, the IFRC has helped over 240 orphans and vulnerable children with practical and emotional support over the last year. This is in addition to supporting 271 people with home based care. Furthermore, IFRC programs have reached more than 7,675 people with HIV prevention messages and has provided children with meals via the Red Cross Kids club.

Key Points

  • Home based care for people living with HIV/AIDS.
  • Practical and emotional support for children.
  • Improving access to food, water, and sanitation.
  • Raising awareness of HIV and prevention.
  • Supporting access to testing and treatment.
  • Supporting income generation projects for people with HIV/AIDS.

Support in China

If we travel farther east, we find that the Red Cross Society of China has helped over 39,000 people affected by HIV/AIDS. This assistance includes education and awareness campaigns in addition to practical support that includes care, treatment, and income development for people living with the disease. Twenty-four households received direct support from the Red Cross, including food, household items, and clothing.

Key Points

  • Providing sex workers with HIV educational materials.
  • The distribution of condoms throughout the region.
  • Support meetings for people living with HIV and their families.
  • Workshops for injecting drug users aimed at stopping the spread of HIV/AIDS.
  • The promotion of HIV treatment and testing.
  • Small business training that allows people living with HIV to support themselves.
  • The promotion of HIV/AIDS awareness to reduce stigma and discrimination

Support in the Netherlands

In the Netherlands, Land Rover Netherlands the Netherlands Red Cross (NLRC) has allocated a $31,000.00 donation to the ‘Children & HIV’ project in addition to loaning 10 Land Rover vehicles to the fundraising program. Land Rover’s support has helped the NLRC raise $11 million overall.

Key Points

  • Support for 3FM’s annual ‘Serious Request’ action week.
  • Vehicle support for fundraising campaigns.

How Land Rover Contributes

You might be wondering how Land Rover plays in to all of this. Primarily, Land Rover provides the use of Land Rover vehicles via direct donations or through loan programs. For example, in South Africa, Land Rover vehicles allow IFRC workers to reach remote locations where they may not otherwise be able to travel. In the Netherlands, Land Rover vehicles were used by radio and television personnel to attend and support local fundraising activities. Overall, Land Rover has provided over $6 million in support to the IFRC since 2007.
