2011 Land Rover LR4 Driver's Side

No, this isn’t a case of déjà vu. It’s just that the 2011 Land Rover LR4 has been on a roll lately. On Monday we reported that the LR4 was ranked as a Top Buy by NADAguides. As it turns out, last week the LR4 was also named the Premium Active Lifestyle category winner of the 2011 Motorist Choice Awards. The Motorist Choice Awards are complied by AutoPacific and IntelliChoice, two leading automotive research companies. The awards recognize vehicles that deliver a compelling combination of consumer satisfaction and lower than expected ownership costs over time. These costs include, but are not limited to, the total cost to own, fuel economy, and resale value.

The Motorist Choice Awards are in its sixth year and are divided into 15 lifestyle segments. These segments are further subdivided into two markets – popular and premium. For this year’s competition, the Dodge Ram HD took the Popular Active Lifestyle side of the award. Last year, the Porsche Cayenne headed up the premium category.

This is certainly not the first “active lifestyle” award the LR4 has commanded.

About the 2011 Land Rover LR4

The LR4 replaced the LR3 for the 2010 model year and has since went on to gather an impressive array of awards and accolades over the past two years. The LR4 might be the quintessential modern Land Rover. It offers unparalleled off-road capability combined with uncompromising comfort and convenience features. The LR4 is equipped with a 5.0-liter LR-V8 that produces 375-horsepower. Combined with its 6-speed transmission with CommandShift®, the LR4 manages anywhere from 12 to 17 miles per gallon, which is almost identical to the LR3. A majority of LR3s are equipped with a 4.4-liter Jaguar-derived V8 that produces 300 horsepower. More power without lowered fuel economy ratings are always welcome.

2011 LR4 Reliability

Now, the question everybody asks: What about reliability? The LR4 is still enjoying its honeymoon period. Most LR4s on the road are well within the four-year, 50,000-mile factory warranty. As such, buyers are still enjoying that coverage, which undoubtedly tempers their opinion on reliability issues and the overall ownership experience. After all, one of the biggest perks to buying a new vehicle is the warranty coverage.

As far as future reliability is concerned, we have a couple of information sources to fall back on. Even though the LR4 a new model, it was based on the LR3 which it replaced. As such, J.D. Power and Associates gave the vehicle a 4.0 out of 10 on its Predicted Reliability rating scale. Independent reliability research firms such as TrueDelta are showing that the LR4 is coming in slightly worse than most competing models.

On the brighter side, you can click here to read about Strategic Vision’s Total Quality Index® (TQI), which rated the LR4 a top pick in the near-luxury category. TQI measures:

  • Satisfaction with the Complete Ownership Experience
  • Perception of Quality
  • Owner Reported Delight
  • Future Purchase Intent
  • Emotional Attachment to Vehicle

2011 LR4 Competitors

The segment which the LR4 serves is intensely competitive. The LR4 faces off against a number of capable offerings from both domestic and overseas rivals. Most interestingly, the LR4 might find itself up against its Range Rover cousin, the 2012 Evoque. A mid-line Range Rover Evoque will put its MSRP square into the LR4’s territory. The LR4 has an introductory MSRP range of $48,500.00 to $57,665.00, while the Evoque has an MSRP range of $43,995.00 to $52,895.00. Add a couple of options and even an Evoque Pure will be giving the LR4 a run for its money when it comes to customers who want a more urban feel for their Land Rover.

Additional Competition Comes From:

  • Acura MDX
  • Acura ZDX
  • Audi Q7
  • BMW X5
  • Chevrolet Tahoe / GMC Yukon
  • Mercedes-Benz M-Class
  • Porsche Cayenne
  • Jeep Grand Cherokee
  • Infiniti QX
  • Lexus GX
  • Lexus RX
  • Volkswagen Touareg
  • Volvo XC90
