Kahn DC100 Surfer Rendering

The official photos of the DC100 concept were released earlier this month, and since then there have been many renderings completed by the media in an attempt to reimagine what was presented by Land Rover. It is well-known that the new Defender will have to be made available in a variety of body styles in order to be a viable option for military, utility, commercial, and NGO buyers. Given this prerequisite, many renderings have been done to see what the DC100 could look like as an off-road vehicle or have expanded the DC100 into a Defender 110. Our own DC100 renderings take a look at the concept as pickup truck and as a four-door with half-doors.

Project Kahn Renderings

It’s important to note that these renderings and all others are just for fun and speculation. There’s no need to take the details with much seriousness.

Project Kahn recently released its take on the DC100. Kahn rendered the DC100 as a “Kahn Expedition Vehicle” with military, surfer, all-terrain, and urban themes. Given the ludicrously large wheels, the zero travel suspension, and the general likelihood that no Kahn-designed vehicle has ever seen anything more challenging than wet grass, the noted design house is probably talking about expeditions to Rodeo Drive. However, the rendered concepts do shed an imaginative light on the DC100. Oddly enough, we think the one feature shown in these renderings that really stands out is the whip antenna, which is quickly becoming a relic of a bygone era (like crank windows and floor-mounted dimmer switches). We also like the idea of the spare tire showing up on the roof, as impractical as it might be to hoist one of those huge wheels up there without suffering some sort of serious injury.

Concept to Production

Ultimately, it’s important to note that these renderings and all others are just for fun and speculation. There’s no need to take the details with much seriousness. The chance of the as-is DC100 seeing production is almost certainly a nil prospect. Most concepts are tossed out onto the show circuit as extreme “what if” ideas by industrial designers to create a halo effect around a new model. Once green-lit, the bean counters and engineers reign it in for actual production. The Land Rover LRX concept that became the much-acclaimed Range Rover Evoque was something of an anomaly in the world of concept cars as far as how closely the production vehicle matched the concept.
