Land Rover DC100 Concept

We have been eagerly awaiting a sneak peek of the new Land Rover Defender concept and the moment has finally arrived. Land Rover has released photos of the all-new Defender DC100 concept that gives us a preview of what we might see come 2015. The DC100 will be officially unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September, at which time we will have much more information to share.

Opening the DC100 Debate

According to Land Rover, the DC100 is intended to “open the debate” about future Defenders.

“Replacing the iconic Defender is one of the biggest challenges in the automotive design world; it is a car that inspires people worldwide. This isn’t a production-ready concept but the beginning of a four-year journey to design a relevant Defender for the 21st century,” said Gerry McGovern, Director of Design at Land Rover.

Based on what we see below, there will certainly be no lack of opinions. Stylistically, it’s a major departure from the current Defender, but it’s impossible to say just how much of the DC100 concept will see production. Initial gut reactions around the web have been leaning (heavily) toward the negative side. We think that most Defender-lovers were expecting something more along the lines of what is shown in the Defender rendering linked here.

It’s rumored that the new Defender will be based on the LR3/LR4 platform, feature a more luxurious interior, and also take advantage of Land Rover’s Terrain Response┬« system.

UPDATE 8/31/2011: We have rendered the DC100 as a truck and a four-door.
