2011 Land Rover Defender

We have a little more information on the fate of the Defender. Edmunds’ Inside Line is reporting that a new Defender concept will be on display at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show. The Frankfurt Auto Show will be held September 13th through the 25th, so we’re only a few weeks away from the reveal. This is good news for those who feared the recent rumors of the Defender’s imminent departure from the Land Rover stable. However, we still do not know exactly what form the Defender will take in the future and speculation still bounces between new and shared platforms.

The first possibility is that an entirely new platform will be developed to underpin the Defender. The upside to this strategy is that it allows Land Rover to really key in on what makes a Defender a Defender. There would be no compromises necessary with a fresh platform. The second option is to use a reworked version of the Discovery (LR3/LR4) chassis. There is already a coil-sprung version of the Discovery chassis available sans Terrain Response®. Refine that chassis down to the essentials and it could easily form the basis of a new Defender. Regardless, it is a good bet that you can expect a new (or re-tuned) chassis to support multiple body forms ranging from pickup trucks to cargo vans.

We are still throwing our hat into the platform sharing ring. This route enjoys a shorter development cycle and reduces cost across multiple models. We are also not discounting the possibility of a continuation Defender being produced in China or India, but for now that is pure speculation.

Long live the Defender!
