Roughly a year or so ago, the Land Rover DC100 was the topic of discussion among Land Rover enthusiasts. However, the concept vehicle that caused so much fuss seems to have fallen off the face of the earth. The last time we reported on it was at the New York Auto Show, and since that time nothing much else has happened regarding the controversial high-tech off-roader even though “production was confirmed” earlier. So, what happened?

DC100 “Massively Encourag[ing]” Yet Not Quite Ready

For starters, even though Land Rover’s John Edwards said he was “massively encouraged” by the response to the DC100, you have to keep in mind Mr. Edwards is paid to say that type of thing. In reality, the response to the DC100 was heavily divided, as was evident by the comments seen throughout Land Rover’s own social media channels and the feedback we received right here at RoverGuide. Some people loved it, some hated it. That’s the nature of things. However, the DC100 has apparently been shelved indefinitely. Note to pendants: “indefinitely” doesn’t mean forever … it means “for an undermined amount of time.”

The existing Land Rover Defender phases out in 2015 with no replacement on deck.

Back in May of 1013,  MotorAuthority speculated that the DC100 had been delayed past 2015 due to Land Rover moving to the Premium Lightweight Architecture (PLA) aluminum platform. However, MotorAuthority also reported that the existing Defender would be phased out by 2015 thanks to stricter emissions standards. This creates a notable gap in Land Rover’s product line. DriveSpark said the same. As did CarBuzz. All similar reports stem from a single Autocar.co.uk interview.

The bottom line is this: the DC100 has fallen off the map, which assuredly disappoints and pleases a whole lot of people at the same time. There has been no new material coming out of Land Rover regarding the DC100 since the Asian debut of the concept in Beijing. Admittedly, the DC100 kind of grew on us here at RoverGuide and we were hoping to see a slightly revised DC100 coming down the pipeline sooner than later. We’re not talking “doing a Bentley” here, but rather just tweaks based on consumer feedback

Time will tell what fate has in store for the DC100 and the Defender in general.
