Journey of Discovery - Taklimakan Desert

We know Land Rover’s Journey of Discovery hasn’t wrapped things up quite yet in Beijing, but we couldn’t resist choosing our 10 favorite photos of the expedition. The photographers plying their trade along the Journey of Discovery route have done some exceptional work, which made choosing just 10 photos an almost impossible task. With any luck, Land Rover will release a book that includes a good portion of the hundreds of photos that were snapped along the way. There’s definitely enough material and undoubtedly a great story to go along with almost all of them.

Our Favorite Set: The Aral Sea

We have to say our favorite photo set comes from the time the expedition spent at the Aral Sea, an almost vanished body of water located between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. The remnants of the Aral Sea and the hulks of rusting ships provided a starkly beautiful contrast to the Land Rover Discovery SUVs. This beauty, however, came at an unforgivable price as the desert-locked ships also stand as silent witnesses to the fate of the region. The Aral Sea is often regarded as “one of the planet’s worst environmental disasters.”

About the Journey of Discovery

It would be interesting to see an itemized loadout of the gear the team packed into the four trucks.

For 50 days and over 8,000 miles, Land Rover’s Journey of Discovery has been making its way to Beijing with the goal of arriving in time for the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition (Auto China). However, the destination is just a secondary goal. The driving force behind the Journey of Discovery is a fundraising campaign that seeks to raise $1.6 million for a water sanitation project in Uganda. You can read more about the fund drive at Land Rover’s 1,000,000th Discovery site

The Journey is also celebrating the production of the 1,000,000th Land Rover Discovery. The four Discovery (LR4) vehicles used on the expedition have been equipped to tackle every type of terrain the team planned to encounter, from snow-covered trails to rutted desert tracks to potholed tarmac. It would be interesting to see an itemized loadout of the gear the team packed into the four trucks.

Journey of Discovery - Ukraine

This photos was taken in a submarine base turned museum located in the Ukraine. We liked this photos because it is one of the few where we see the road — or in this case, a tunnel within the base — from the perspective of the team. Unfortunately, Land Rover’s PR team never replied to our request for team member biographies, so we don’t know much about the crew behind the expedition.

Journey of Discovery - Moscow, Russia

The expedition team encountered a wide range of cultures, foods, historical places, climates, architecture, landscapes, and people. In this photo, the team’s vehicle strike a pose in front of the icon architecture found in Moscow’s Red Square.

Some more of that architecture and culture we mentioned earlier. This time in Kazakhstan.
