Land Rover's Journey of Discovery: Italy

After Land Rover’s Journey of Discovery wrapped things up at the Geneva Motor Show, the team continued on through the Alps to Aosta Valley, Italy.  Before setting out, the expedition took stock of its equipment. Aiming to be as self-sufficient as possible, the team has packed everything from suits for ambassadorial events to tools, fire extinguishers, fuel, spare parts, and emergency equipment. Additional gear includes inflatable jacks, sand ladders, and travelling rations for those remote stretches.

The Journey of Discovery expedition is not only celebrating the 1,000,000th Discovery, which itself is one of the team vehicles, but is also supporting a good cause. The team hopes to raise $1.6 million for a water sanitation project in Uganda. The project is being administered by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), one of Land Rover’s Global Humanitarian and Conservation Partners. The water sanitation project aims to provide a long-term fresh water source to 45,000 Ugandans. According to the IFRC, 51 percent of the rural population of Uganda lacks basic sanitation and 36 percent cannot access safe water.

“780 million people in the world still have no access to safe water. This lack of clean drinking water and basic sanitation is arguably the biggest killer of children worldwide. Under fives are particularly at risk, especially as coming from the world’s most deprived areas their immune systems are already further weakened by poor diets. A stomach bug from bad water really is a matter of life or death for many of them,” said Robert Fraser, senior officer for water and sanitation within the Red Cross.

If you would like to help Land Rover reach its goal, you can visit the 1,000,000th Discovery page to find a donation link. The current donation total sits at two percent complete.
