Land Rover's Journey of Discovery

In our previous post, we talked about the 1,000,000th Land Rover Discovery and a little bit about the associated Journey of Discovery expedition. Land Rover’s Journey of Discovery brings back memories of watching Land Rovers roll across deserts, through jungles, and over mountains in pursuit of whatever happened to be on the other side. Since living vicariously through the people who undertake these challenges is the closest we’ll ever get to our own expedition, we were excited when Land Rover announced this 8,000-mile overland challenge.

Adding another layer of cool to the event is the inspiration. Land Rover’s expedition is inspired by the First Overland Expedition of 1955, which is more formally known as the Oxford & Cambridge Far Eastern Expedition (Wikipedia entry). In 1955, a sponsored team of six intrepid explorers set out from Birmingham in Series 1 Land Rovers and ultimately ended up in Singapore. Land Rover’s journey will start in Birmingham and see a team of Land Rover Experience professional drive three four Discovery vehicles to Beijing over a period of 50 days.  The event will cover 8,000 miles and visit over a dozen countries along the way.

An Expedition for a Good Cause

IFRC Water Sanitation ProjectBut, it gets better yet. The company hopes the event will help raise  £1 million ($1.6 million) for a water sanitation project in Uganda. The project is being developed by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), one of Land Rover’s Global Humanitarian and Conservation Partners. The water sanitation program aims to reach 45,000 people in Uganda.

“Land Rover is delighted to launch the one million pound fundraiser in aid of the IFRC, an organisation we have had a relationship with since 1954. The funds will be used directly by the IFRC over a three-year period and will be donated to a water sanitation project in Uganda, with over 45,000 beneficiaries,” said Mark Cameron, Land Rover Global Brand Extension Director.

You can help Land Rover meet its fundraising goal by visiting a donation page managed by Ammado, a Dublin-based organization that helps nonprofits, companies, and individuals connect to enact positive change. The event started yesterday so the donation total is sitting at just £191.00. The target date for completion is May 31st, 2012.

Journey of Discovery Mini-Documentary

Land Rover has created a mini-documentary about the First Overland Expedition and the 2012 Journey of Discovery. The mini-documentary gives a good background on the 1955 journey and introduces us to both members from the original expedition and from the current event.
