DC100 and DC100 Sport

Autocar.co.uk landed an exclusive interview with Tata chairman Ratan Tata that revealed some interesting bits of information about the upcoming 2015 Land Rover Defender. The new Defender will be based on the Defender Concept 100 — the DC100 and DC100 Sport — vehicles that have been making the rounds during this 2011/2012 auto show season. Most signficantly, Tata indicated that the new Defender could be manufactured in Pune, India, with complete knockdown kits (CKD) sent back to the UK for final assembly.

The strategy has two strong benefits for Jaguar Land Rover. The first is that it should lower the costs. We’ve long said that we hoped the new Defender competes with the higher-end Jeep Wrangler trims here in the U.S., and manufacturing the vehicle in India is a step in that direction. Additionally, it would allow the company to assemble the vehicle near extremely important emerging markets such as India, China, and Russia.

The Autocar.co.uk article also made mention of the Defender potentially sharing components with a revised Tata Aria. For reference, the current Aria’s form and function is similar in nature to the North American Dodge Journey. However, the core chassis will be a modified version of the body-on-frame T5 underpinnings found on the Discovery (LR3/LR4) and the Range Rover Sport. Overall styling is said to be essentially fixed at this point, with the only changes coming as refinements to details such as wheels, grill, lights, and the interior.

Land Rover Discovery Vision Concept NCC-1701 Interior

The interior of the Land Rover Discovery Vision Concept looks a lot like the bridge of the J.J. Abrams' USS Enterprise NCC-1701 reboot. This can be either a good or a bad thing, depending on how much of a Star Trek geek you happen to be.
