2012 North American Truck of the Year

Today at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, Land Rover was presented with yet another award for the 2012 Range Rover Evoque. The Evoque scored top honors as the North American Truck of the Year ahead of the BMW X3 and the Honda CR-V. Incidentally, last month we compared the Range Rover Evoque Pure and the BMW X3 xDrive28i.

The North American Car and Truck of the Year awards are somewhat unique in an industry that loves nothing more than handing out accolades. Instead of coming from a single source such as a publication, website, or testing organization, the North American Car and Truck of the Year awards are judged by a panel of 50 automotive journalists from the U.S. and Canada. The contenders are judged on a points system that narrows down an initial 10 vehicles to three finalists in each category. Once the finalists are determined, the judging panel votes again to determine the overall winner. In order to qualify, vehicles must be new or significantly updated for the new model year.

“We are honored that the all-new Range Rover Evoque has been named the 2012 North American Truck of the Year, one of the most celebrated automotive awards in our industry,” said Andy Goss, President, Jaguar Land Rover North America. “This recognition is in keeping with the overwhelmingly positive global response from consumers who are selecting the vehicle for its ideal combination of luxury and capability, within a sustainable package.”

The North American Car of the Year went to the 2012 Hyundai Elantra. The Elantra beat out the Ford Focus and the Volkswagen Passat for the award. This marks the second North American Car of the Year award for Hyundai, and a first for Land Rover. Hyundai last won the award in 2009 with the well-received Hyundai Genesis.
